2007-2008 Children’s Sunday School Recap

May 13, 2008

We’ve had so much fun during the past year in Children’s Sunday School. We explored six new Bible stories: Adam and Eve, David the King, In the Manger, Acceptance, Washing Feet, and The Boy’s Lunch. We explored each Bible story for five weeks, with a different activity each week. Activities include Art, Cooking, Storytelling/Drama, Media and Games.

The program has been energized with new faces this year; both children and adult volunteers. We have a wonderful group of children who participate regularly. The children are divided into 3 age groups which rotate around the different activities. Tom D. lead one of the more interesting projects we did this year. He and the children built a full size model of the Ark of the Covenant for our series on David the King. We all learned a lot with that project, including how long a cubit is!

The kids are always doing something different each week (cooking, art, drama, media or games). Exploring the same Bible story for five weeks help them remember the story better. The children are coming regularly and building on shared experiences each week. As volunteers in this ministry, it is wonderful to see the children grow in their knowledge of the Lord and in their relationships with each other and to be a part of their lives in a meaningful way. The program is open for children from grades K through 8th. 7th and 8th graders take on the role of shepherds. We invite you to bring your children, nieces/nephews, grandchildren, neighbors and friends to our program in the fall.

The rotation model is very flexible and makes it easy to volunteer as a shepherd, activity leader or help with special props. The role that shepherds play is key in helping nurture the sense of community and be on hand to lend a helping hand for the teachers, but they do not have to prepare to teach a lesson. It is easy to get involved. A small contribution goes a long way because this is a team effort. If you have a talent for music, you may volunteer to lead music station for one Bible story which involves perhaps one to three Sundays. Just your presence as a shepherd means a lot to the children and teachers. We encourage everyone to prayerfully consider taking part in this very rewarding and important ministry when we start back up in the fall. Look for our table at Rally Day in mid-August.
